Perspective
Join the HDR Party As part of the UHD Blu-ray standard, HDR or High Dynamic Range is set to take 2016 by storm as this latest leap forward in picture quality takes 4K to the next level. |
To experience this you'll need an HDR-compatible 4K UHD source, HDR content and an HDR-compatible display. Panasonic, Philips and Samsung offer UHD Blu-ray players supporting HDR and the selection of HDR Blu-ray titles and streamed content from the likes of Netflix and Amazon is already good and only getting better.
Although HDR-compatible screens are now readily available from all the major manufacturers, be aware that levels of peak brightness and depth of black levels - measured in 'nits' - can vary among screens and manufacturers. The Ultra HD Premium logo appearing with 4K content, sources and displays can be a good indication that they meet the minimum standards for HDR as set out by the UHD Alliance - an association comprising leading manufacturers and content producers. However, as this 'standard' is effectively just a program that these brands put their names to, other manufacturers, such as Sony may choose to use their own branding to push the HDR message. Also be aware of a similar initiative from Dolby called Dolby Vision. One thing you can count on regardless of manufacturer is full HDMI 2.0a compliance on all HDR screens. The complete line of WyreStorm's H2 Series HDMI and HDBaseT 4K matrix switchers, receivers and extender are fully HDR compatible, supporting 3840x2160 @24hz 4:2:0 HDR 10-bit per channel (the BT.2020 standard). 4K UHD HDR content is distributed locally over HDMI with WyreStorm 4x4 and 6x6 matrix models, or over longer distances using HDBaseT up to 35m/114ft with the WyreStorm H2 Kit or up to 70m/230ft with 6x6 and 8x8 models. |
